Correlates of ideal cardiovascular health in European adolescents: The HELENA study

Abstract: Since in our study older adolescents had worse iCVH than younger adolescents, early promotion of cardiovascular health may be important. Future studies may also investigate the usefulness of limiting television viewing to promote iCVH. Finally, since adolescents of mothers with low education had poorer iCVH, it may be of special interest to tailor public health promotion to adolescents from families with low socioeconomic status.

“…In the present study, when including passive smoking in the definition of CVH, mothers not living alone and absence of smoking during pregnancy were related to higher ideal CVH in children at age 5 years. This suggests that a favorable family environment is related to ideal CVH in early childhood, in agreement with results of the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) study which showed that higher maternal education was related to higher CVH in adolescents ( 30 ). Furthermore, childbirth data were not related to CVH at age 5 years, possibly due to the inclusion of relatively healthy babies.…”

“…Even though our study spans a fairly short age range, older adolescents showed worse dietary patterns and a higher prevalence of smoking. These previously reported findings were contributed to the loss of parental control in adolescents [9,30]. Furthermore, in longitudinal trajectories of dietary changes leaving home was the strongest predictor for negative trends in healthy diet intake in the transition from adolescence to adulthood [31].…”

“…This is an important result, since it is grafted onto the widespread concept that lifestyle habits improvement is mainly based on healthy and physical activity promotion. However, WBI index gains subjective information about health status of the adolescents and, therefore, gives additional information to the more objective evidences based on the beneficial effects of healthy diet and performance of physical activity (33,34).…”
