Correlates of depression in self-neglecting older adults: A cross-sectional study examining the role of alcohol abuse and pain in increasing vulnerability

Abstract: Purpose Self-neglect among older adults results in increased morbidity and mortality rates. Depression is strongly linked to self-neglect and when untreated severely complicates management of health and functional outcomes. The study aims to identify factors correlated with depression to inform approaches to service recruitment and retention that improve long-term outcomes. Methods The sample included urban community-dwelling older adults (n=96), 65-years of age and older with Adult Protective Services subst… Show more

“…All participants included in the primary intervention met the following criteria: Participants (a) were at least 65 years of age, (b) spoke English or Spanish, (c) were community-dwelling, (d) had APS-substantiated self-neglect, (e) were taking medications for a chronic disease, (f) demonstrated capacity to give informed consent, and (g) were within a 1-h driving distance of Houston, Texas. A three-step recruitment process, successfully used previously to enroll over 300 older adults with APS-substantiated self-neglect in interventional studies, was used for the primary study and has been described elsewhere (Hansen, Flores, Coverdale, & Burnett, 2016). Written informed consent was obtained in the homes of all participants using a process reviewed and approved by the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Division of Adult Protective Services (Approval Number HSC-MS-12-0758).…”
