Correlates of body fat and waist circumference in children from São Caetano do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine potential correlates of body fat (BF) and waist circumference (WC) in children. The sample included 328 children (169 boys) aged 9-11 years. BF (%) was measured using a bioelectrical impedance scale. WC measurements were made on exposed skin at the end of a normal expiration using a non-elastic anthropometric tape. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior were measured using accelerometers. Participants with complete individual, family and ho… Show more

“…The results of the studies presented here suggest that the predictive value for the CRF result with reference to the measures WC (R 2 = 47.1%) and WHtR (R 2 = 50.3%) was close to the predictive value of the BF% (R 2 = 50.3%) estimated by means of bioimpedance. In addition, in other studies comprising children, significant correlates of BF and WC were noticed [46].…”

“…Despite this, we also agree with the hypothesis that families with higher socioeconomic level and higher education have a lower relation with active transportation 13 , probably because they own cars, thus opting for the use of their own transportation. This second hypothesis could justify the results of youth in the city of São Caetano do Sul, in São Paulo, where the use of passive transportation was more present 18 . As it is the city with the highest Human Development Imdex in Brazil 18 , it was believed that the active transportation was the most common, due to favorable conditions and structures, but the results were the opposite of what was expected.…”

As it is the city with the highest Human Development Imdex in Brazil 18 , it was believed that the active transportation was the most common, due to favorable conditions and structures, but the results were the opposite of what was expected. In view of this, we raised a third hypothesis, in which we believe that just a favorable environment is not enough, awareness of family members and the neighborhood is necessary, in addition to a multifaceted approach directed to the community 23 .…”
