ABSTRACT:The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship of sociodemographic characteristics and activity overload with the quality of life of relative caregivers of elderly dependents at home. This is an epidemiological, transversal study, conducted with 58 relative caregivers of elderly people registered in Family Health Programs in a municipality in the state of Bahia. Sociodemographic data were collected; in addition, the Katz Index of Independence, Zarit Burden Interview, and WHOQOL-bref were administered. The data were analyzed using correlation and multiple linear regression. The Zarit scale was negatively associated with all areas of the WHOQOL-bref domain, which was corroborated by the multiple regression model, which identified that the Zarit scale alone was able to predict the impact of care on quality of life of the studied caregivers. There is evidence of a need for expansion of social and health support to caregivers in an attempt to minimize overload, improving the quality of life of these individuals. DESCRIPTORS: CALIDAD DE VIDA DE FAMILIARES CUIDADORES DE ANCIANOS DEPENDIENTES EN CASARESUMEN: Se objetivó analizar la asociación de las características socio-demográficas y sobrecarga de actividades con la calidad de vida de familiares cuidadores de ancianos dependientes en casa. Estudio epidemiológico, transversal, realizado con 58 cuidadores familiares de personas mayores, registrado en Estrategias de Salud de la Familia, de un municipio del estado de Bahía. Los datos fueron recolectados por medio de instrumentos sociodemográficos, además del Katz Index of Independence, Zarit Burden Interview, y el WHOQOL-bref, que fueron analizados mediante estadística descriptiva, de correlación y regresión lineal múltiple. La escala Zarit se asoció negativamente con todas las áreas del WHOQOL-bref. Corroborando este hallazgo, el modelo de regresión múltiple aplicado identificó que la escala Zarit sola es capaz de predecir el impacto del cuidado sobre la calidad de vida de los cuidadores estudiados. Hay evidencia de la necesidad de expansión de la ayuda social y de la salud a los cuidadores, en un intento de minimizar la sobrecarga, mejorando la calidad de vida de estos individuos. Reflection on the public home care caregivers profiles

Introduction: The increase of life expectancy and the decrease in mortality rate have resulted in changes in the epidemiological profile with predominance of non-communicable chronic diseases and global changes in the care system. This scenario has generated increased demands for caregivers, which in Brazilian reality, tends to arise in the family environment. Objective: This study aimed to know and reflect on the caregivers’ profiles of public home care in the city of Goiânia, Goiás. Methods: The data were collected through the application of a caregiver characterization tool and presented descriptively. Results: The caregiver’s profile of this study corroborates the ones described in the specific literature. Most of them are females, married, patient’s spouse or daughter, having health problems, dedicating twelve or more hours to caring and informal exercise of this activity. Conclusion: The results show the significance of family caregivers within the family care and lead to the reflection about this role in the care sphere and the need for public policies that offer a support social network and that are tuned with this reality.

Estudo descritivo e transversal objetivou verificar possíveis relações entre nível de independência funcional, perda, manutenção e/ou resgate de papéis ocupacionais e fatores pessoais de 46 pessoas sequeladas por doenças neurológicas. A pesquisa foi aprovada por comitê de ética e os dados foram coletados por meio da Medida de Independência Funcional, da Lista de Identificação de Papéis Ocupacionais e leitura dos prontuários. Os papéis de serviço doméstico, membro de família e passatempo/amador apresentaram maiores índices de desempenho contínuo. Observou-se alta frequência de aposentadoria em idade produtiva, embora os participantes tenham designado muita importância ao papel de trabalhador e apresentarem nível de independência compatível com a possibilidade de desempenho desse papel. Ressalta-se a hipótese de que a doença e a deficiência podem não ser os principais fatores determinantes de limitações na atividade e restrições na participação de pessoas sequeladas, enfatizando a influência de fatores pessoais e ambientais nesses aspectos.
