Correction: Poor Regenerative Outcome after Skeletal Muscle Necrosis Induced by Bothrops asper Venom: Alterations in Microvasculature and Nerves

Abstract: Background: Viperid snakebite envenoming is characterized by prominent local tissue damage, including muscle necrosis. A frequent outcome of such local pathology is deficient skeletal muscle regeneration, which causes muscle dysfunction, muscle loss and fibrosis, thus provoking permanent sequelae that greatly affect the quality of life of patients. The causes of such poor regenerative outcome of skeletal muscle after viperid snakebites are not fully understood.Methodology/Principal Findings: A murine model of … Show more

“…SVMPs induce local and systemic hemorrhage, myonecrosis, blistering, dermonecrosis, edema, and coagulopathies, in addition to being algogenic and strongly pro-inflammatory [9,10,11,12]. Furthermore, the pathological alterations induced by SVMPs in skeletal muscle tissue contribute to the poor muscle regeneration characteristic of these envenomings [13,14]. …”

“…Several aspects of the local pathological effects induced by SVMPs have been studied, such as the microvascular damage leading to hemorrhage [15,16], skeletal muscle necrosis and poor muscle regeneration [13,14,17], blistering, and dermonecrosis [18,19], as well as the identification of inflammatory mediators responsible for pain, edema, and leukocyte infiltration [20,21,22]. To a great extent, these alterations are considered to be associated in some manner with the action of SVMPs on the extracellular matrix (ECM).…”

“…Muscle regeneration subsequent to myonecrosis results in partial to complete structural and functional recuperation, depending on the severity of envenomation [11]. For regeneration to be successful, there must be adequate blood flow, leukocyte infiltration, innervation of the regenerated cells, and the basal lamina around the necrotic muscular fibers must remain intact.…”
