“…On the other hand, if the study had been limited to subjects with severe predialysis acidosis, perhaps a significant correlation might have been discovered. Based on the theory that metabolic acidosis stimulates protein catabolism and decreases protein synthesis, the effect of an increasing predialysis serum bicarbonate concentration on the nutrition of hemodialysis patients as measured by albumin for 16 weeks was investigated [10].
