Correction of Epiblepharon of the Upper Eyelid by the Buried Suture Technique: Correlation with Morphological Features of the Upper Eyelid

Abstract: Aims: To investigate the correlation between morphological features of the upper eyelid and surgical results of the correction of epiblepharon by the buried suture technique. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted from March 2001 to June 2005. One hundred and one patients (202 eyes) with upper eyelid epiblepharon were enrolled in this study. Surgical amount, lid thickness and height of the tarsal plate were measured. Eighty-four cases with epiblepharon were corrected by full-thickness buried sutures w… Show more

“…The upper eyelid thicknesses measured at the medial, central, and lateral points of three fixation points, and the height of the tarsal plate and the amount of surgery were similar 11 (Table 1 ). Regarding the clinical characteristics of the epiblepharon patients, depending on the surgical procedures, the amount of surgery between the blepharoplasty with a BDTS group with lower eyelid epiblepharon correction and the BDTS group with lower eyelid epiblepharon correction and epicanthoplasty was significantly different ( P < 0.05; Table 2 ).…”

“…Furthermore, when the thickness of the lateral upper eyelid was >3.25 mm, the chance of recurrence of epiblepharon was high (13.2% recurrence). 11 …”

“…After the successful detection of the line of sight, the shape of the tarsus, located in the upper lid, was depicted in the form of a quadratic function. The precise detection of the tarsus curvature may be usful before surgical correction of deformities of the upper lid [16,17], or to assist the development of flexible or customized lid implants as treatment for paralytic lagophthalmus, since inflexible standard implants do not meet the anatomical requirements [13,18,19].…”
