Correction of electrode polarization contributions to the dielectric properties of normal and cancerous breast tissues at audio/radiofrequencies

Abstract: Spurious contributions from electrode polarization (EP) are a major nuisance in dielectric measurements of biological tissues and hamper accurate determination of tissue properties in the audio/radiofrequencies. Various electrode geometries and/or treatments have been employed traditionally to reduce EP contributions, although none succeeded to completely remove EP from measurements on tissues for all practical frequency ranges. A method of correction for contributions of EP to the dielectric properties of tis… Show more

“…In fact, it appears that the four-electrode system may also suffer from other undesired problems (Grimnes and Martinsen, 2007). Thus, further steps generally must be taken in order to account for the influence of EP on the measured spectra (Feldman et al, 1998;Raicu et al, 1998;Bordi et al, 2001;Stoneman et al, 2007).…”

“…Among others he refers to different models for describing the behaviour of the EPI. The most common models are: i) A frequency dependent resistor and capacitor (R p (ω) and C p (ω)) in series [1][7] ii) A frequency dependent resistor and capacitor in parallel [8] iii) A Cole circuit or similar [1][17] iv) Constant Phase Element (CPE) [6][9] [10] v) A permittivity model similar to the Cole-…”

“…In the first step, the electromagnetic properties (permittivity and conductivity σ) of the different healthy tissues are set to the common values used in literature [7] while those of the tumor are based on a specific study of cancerous tissues at radio frequencies [8] (see Table 1). The amplitudes and the phases of four incident waves are adjusted so that to maximize the power absorbed inside the liver and minimize the power absorbed elsewhere in the body (see Fig.…”
