Correction of Celiac Disease After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia

Abstract: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has been shown to correct or improve a variety of autoimmune disorders. This has not been reported for celiac disease, but transmission to a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipient from a donor with celiac disease has been reported. We report a 12-year-old girl with celiac disease who was diagnosed with acute leukemia and received an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Her celiac disease resolved after the hematopoietic stem cell transplan… Show more

“…Re G et al [6] reported a case of hairy cell leukaemia after a history of celiac disease. Kline et al [7] reported a case of celiac disease that developed acute myeloid leukaemia 3 years after diagnosis of celiac disease. He was treated with conventional chemotherapy followed by allogenic stem cell transplantation and her symptoms of celiac disease improved as well [7].…”

“…Kline et al [7] reported a case of celiac disease that developed acute myeloid leukaemia 3 years after diagnosis of celiac disease. He was treated with conventional chemotherapy followed by allogenic stem cell transplantation and her symptoms of celiac disease improved as well [7]. Autologous HSCT was reported recently in a series of 7 adults with refractory CD with aberrant T cells [8].…”

“…Case reports and case-control studies have also found an association between AL and autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis [35], Sjogren syndrome [36], celiac disease [37,38], systemic lupus erythematosus [39] and autoimmune thyroid disorders [40,41]. The aetiology of leukaemia in these cases seems to be multifactorial and may involve the following: genetic susceptibility (i.e.…”

“…As depicted, the initial reports of HSCT for JIA in particular are encouraging, 43,45,46 though reports of a high incidence of macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) early on raised a 'red flag' with regard to intolerable morbidity and mortality in a spectrum of diseases where short-term disease-related mortality is low. 44 The 'incidental' cure of celiac disease in a child receiving a transplant for AML 53 is reminiscent of the early findings in adults. The thymic-dependent role of regulatory T cells reported as part of a pediatric study 30 seems particularly relevant in children whose thymi are still functioning under normal circumstances.…”
