Corporate Social Responsibility Index for Mine Sites

Abstract: A new quantitative index to analyse the corporate social responsibility (CSR) level of mine sites was developed, providing an easy and friendly tool to analyse and apply a continuous improvement approach to CSR levels, being able to involve all the potential stakeholders. The index can be used in any type of project and stage: prospecting and exploration, development, mining, processing, closure and rehabilitation. The system consists of two dimensions, environment and socio-economic, formed by 30 elements tha… Show more

“…Here is where corporate social responsibility (CSR) assessments can play an important role (Jenkins and Yakovleva 2006;Hilson 2012), providing a qualitative and quantitative analysis by mining project. However, while qualitative CSR analysis has been extensively studied, quantitative approaches are quite rare (Bascompta et al 2022), with mainly general quantitative analysis for the whole firm (Trumpp and Guenther 2017) or environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) indexes such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) (Fowler and Hope 2007;Lee and Faff 2009). In this regard, some standards developed by well-known organizations, like the Responsible Mining Foundation (RMF) or the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), are not applicable from a quantitative point of view at the mine-site level (Bascompta et al 2022).…”

“…Finally, corporate social responsibility and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) guidelines are considered throughout the life cycle of mining projects, from its conception to the post-closure stage, making the communities neighboring the mine a key stakeholder [16,28,29]. This is how high-density mine tailings and dewatering technologies such as filtered tailings are positioning themselves as green mining solutions [30].…”

“…Unfortunately, history tells us that mining has been marked by catastrophic events related to the lack of sustainability and lack of security. Events of ecosystem contamination, diseases in neighboring communities, and accidents of mining workers in underground and surface mining operations have allowed the mining activity to learn lessons and improve its productive system [ 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”
