Coronavirus Pneumonia Following Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation for Breast Cancer

Abstract: Infectious bronchitis virus, otherwise known as coronavirus, can cause mild upper respiratory tract illnesses in children and adults. Rarely has coronavirus been linked, either by serology or nasal wash, to pneumonia. We report a case of a young woman who, following treatment for stage IIIA breast cancer using a high-dose chemotherapy regimen followed by autologous bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, developed respiratory failure and was found to have coronavirus pneumonia as diagnosed by electron micro… Show more

“…HCoV-NL63 was detected in a BAL sample from 1 patient who died of respiratory failure, who also had influenza A and HMPV detected simultaneously. Four cases of lower respiratory tract infections have been described including a fatal HCoV–NL63 infection in an adult HCT patient [72, 73*, 74]. Thus, HCoVs may occasionally cause lower respiratory tract disease after HCT, but the overall progression rate seems to be very low.…”

“…Two of these HCoV strains, designated OC43 and 229E, were detected in individuals with common colds, and occasionally in young children, elderly persons, immunocompromised individuals, and military personnel with lower respiratory tract infection (LRI) [Chany et al, 1982; Falsey et al, 2002; Folz and Elkordy, 1999; Gagneur et al, 2002; McIntosh et al, 1974; Monto, 1974; Riski and Hovi, 1980; Sizun et al, 1995; Sizun et al, 1994; Wenzel et al, 1974]. Recently, three new HCoV strains have been identified using both molecular and traditional culture methods: severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) [Drosten et al, 2003], human coronavirus Netherlands (HCoV-NL63) [Fouchier et al, 2004; van der Hoek et al, 2004], and human coronavirus Hong Kong (CoV-HKU1) [Woo et al, 2005].…”
