Coronary artery disease and risk of adverse cardiac events and stroke

Abstract: The presence and extent of coronary artery disease was associated with an incremental risk of not only death, cardiac death, myocardial infarction, but also ischaemic stroke over a 7-year period.

“…10,11 The association between CAD and ischaemic stroke has also been indicated in a previous study analysing our entire cohort, that is, primarily including patients without AF. 12 In the latter an association between extent of CAD and incremental risk of ischaemic stroke was suggested. In this cohort restricted to AF patients, however, such a relationship was not found.…”

“…Ischemic stroke and coronary artery disease share similar pathophysiology, 33 and patients with a history of myocardial infarction or PCI have a higher risk of stroke during the follow-up period. 34 In this study, the risk of stroke was significantly greater only when PCI was performed within 1-3 years of surgery. It is hypothesized that during the first post-operative year, the probability of stroke could decrease due to DAPT therapy after PCI.…”

“…The risk of cardiovascular events among CAD patients increases with an increasing extent of CAD. 18–20 We here report the novel finding that the presence of PAD is associated with a higher cardiovascular risk than the presence of non-significant coronary stenoses or of one significant stenosis, only with 2 or ≥3 significant stenoses, the risk of CAD patients approached that of those with PAD. Thus, when considering the risk conferred by CAD, it is important to take into account the severity of the disease.…”
