Coronary arterial fistulas

Abstract: A coronary arterial fistula is a connection between one or more of the coronary arteries and a cardiac chamber or great vessel. This is a rare defect and usually occurs in isolation. Its exact incidence is unknown.

“…CAFs are defined as abnormalities of termination. There is abnormal direct communication between one or more coronary arteries with another vessel (also called coronary-vascular fistulas) or a cardiac chamber (called coronary-cameral fistulas) bypassing the myocardial capillary network [2,3,4,5,6,7,8]. This is in contrast to abnormalities of origin (i.e., anomalous coronary arteries or arteries arising from the pulmonary artery).…”

“…The growing number of cases reported in the recent literature, although too few to establish an association or to estimate the prevalence of undiagnosed CAFs among patients with newly diagnosed AF [3], brings up an important question worth further investigation. More sophisticated guidelines will be needed to subject carefully selected patients to advanced cardiac imaging techniques for CAF screening.…”

“…The exact incidence of CAFs is unknown. Although they are detected incidentally in most cases and hence remain a rare observation, they have been increasingly reported to be associated with cardiac arrhythmias including AF [3]. An example is the case we have discussed in this article.…”

“…On colour Doppler flow imaging, large flow may be seen at the source, along the length of the vessel and the exit site [28]. Thrombotic and vascular masses have been visualised by echocardiography.…”
