Coronal breadth of human primary anterior teeth

Abstract: Original data for mesiodistal diameter of deciduous anterior teeth on 180 White children show: (1) mean size is smallest for the lower central incisor and largest for the upper canine, ( 2 ) means from combining widths on the left anterior teeth of each arch are larger in the maxilla than the mandible by 4.0 mm, (3) individual differences for widths of the upper central and lateral incisors extend from one child with these teeth of similar size to another child with the central incisor larger than the lateral … Show more

“…The low statistical power of small sample sizes was their primary hindrance. Meredith and Knott (1968) confirmed the low but discernible size dimorphism by enumerating the published samples then available, noting too that boys and girls were equally variable and that adding tooth types together increased the absolute sex difference (thus adumbrating the use of multivariate methods for sex determination).…”

“…The present study expands on the preliminary paper by Harris (2001), and is based on almost twice as many groups. Also see the comparative study of three primary tooth types (i1, i2, and c) by Meredith and Knott (1968). Time depth of the archaeological specimens was restricted to avoid the larger tooth sizes of Paleolithic samples (e.g., Frayer, 1978;Smith, 1978;Brace et al, 1991), which in any event have small sample sizes, from distorting the contemporary patterns of variation.…”
