Corona based air-flow using parallel discharge electrodes

Abstract: A novel air-flow generator based on the effect of ion wind has been developed by the simultaneous generation of both positive and negative ions using two electrodes of opposite polarity placed in parallel. Unlike the conventional unipolar-generators, this bipolar configuration creates an ion wind, which moves away from both electrodes and yields a very low net charge on the device. The electro-hydrodynamic behaviour of air-flow has been experimentally and numerically studied. The velocity of ion wind reaches v… Show more

“…An electric field caused by a high voltage isolated from the sampling collector is applied between two discharge electrodes to generate ionized wind. By the effect of the electric field and bipolar ionized wind, particles are neutralized and gently shifted toward the collection cavity of the channel [8]- [10]. Since neither electrode nor sampling chip is installed inside the channel, there is not any obstacle through the channel.…”

“…Hence, EHD is a potential method supported by technological advances in microfabrication [1] [2]. The jet flow based on this approach was recently applied in airflow control [3] [4]; propulsion technology [5]- [7] [8] and bio-electronic device [9]. In this paper, ionic corona is used to develop angular rate sensors in 3D space where a flow vibrates by an inertial force.…”
