Corneal topography with high-speed swept source OCT in clinical examination

Abstract: We present the applicability of high-speed swept source (SS) optical coherence tomography (OCT) for quantitative evaluation of the corneal topography. A high-speed OCT device of 108,000 lines/s permits dense 3D imaging of the anterior segment within a time period of less than one fourth of second, minimizing the influence of motion artifacts on final images and topographic analysis. The swept laser performance was specially adapted to meet imaging depth requirements. For the first time to our knowledge the res… Show more

“…However, the cornea and the crystalline lens surfaces are non-rotationally symmetric, therefore 3-D measurements are required. Recently, OCT combined with dedicated image processing algorithms provide accurate 3-D corneal [30,[38][39][40] and lens [28] surface reconstructions after distortion correction.…”

“…Several research groups demonstrated corneal topographic measurements with ultrahigh speed anterior segment OCT [20,106,107,[109][110][111]. Karnowski et al presented corneal topographic maps obtained with a Fourier-domain OCT system operating at 108,000 axial scans per second [106]. They demonstrated good agreement between Fourier-domain OCT-based topographic maps and those obtained with a rotating Scheimpflug imaging and Placido topography (Fig.…”

“…Very high performance anterior segment OCT systems have already been demonstrated in research centers [18,20,22,[106][107][108][109]. The performance of commercial anterior segment OCT will also improve as the cost of implementation drops and clinical application grows.…”

“…The Boston KPros are illustrated in Figure 1. KPro [26][27][28][29][30] includes a protruding cylinder that passes through an opening in the eyelid. A donor cornea is placed between the front and back plates, and the combination is sutured into the patient's corneal opening.…”
