Corneal sensitivity in patients with leprosy and in controls.

Abstract: Aims-In a quantitative prospective study the corneal sensation in patients with leprosy was compared with age matched controls. Methods-The patients with leprosy were classified as paucibacillary and multibacillary and were divided in three groups: (1) patients without clinically detectable eye pathology; (2) patients with lagophthalmos, (3) patients with signs ofiridocyclitis. The corneal sensitivity was assessed with the Cochet and Bonnet aesthesiometer. Results-There was a significant decrease in corneal se… Show more

“…In human medicine esthesiometry is a valuable diagnostic tool to diagnose or to monitor progress of different eye diseases, to follow up healing after surgical treatments, to control compatibility of contact lenses, to diagnose neurologic diseases, to recognize early diabetic polyneuropathy and to recognize side effects of drugs 20,25–41 . Eye diseases in humans with accompanying decrease of corneal sensitivity are viral, bacterial and parasitic keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, corneal erosion and ulceration, chemical burns, corneal perforation, corneal scar formation, corneal dystrophy, glaucoma, and diabetic polyneuropathy 18,20,25,28,33,37,41,42 .…”
