Corneal Laceration Associated With Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Abstract: A 64-year-old woman underwent bilateral upper eyelid blepharoplasty and subsequently presented with decreased vision at her first postoperative visit 1 week later. She was found to have an 8-mm partial-thickness corneal laceration of her left eye and underwent immediate surgical laceration repair. The laceration etiology was thought to be related to damage from the initial blepharoplasty incision or Bovie cautery tip–induced laceration. After laceration repair, she had residual astigmatism and corneal scarring… Show more

“…One of the possible injuries resulting from a motor vehicle accident when the driver does not wear a seatbelt is corneal trauma and lacerations, in this case from a window fragment. A corneal laceration is one of the more extreme of eye wounds and can leave a permanent partial or full-thickness corneal lysis [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 ]. These can result in severe deformities, scars, and damage to surrounding tissues such as the limbus, sclera, and pupil.…”

“…Cosmetic laser-related and light energy-related ocular mishaps are common; however, 2 rare cases of CO 2 laser-associated corneal perforation and one case of cautery-associated corneal laceration have been reported in the literature. 2–4…”

“…Corneal injuries associated with incision equipment, although exceedingly rare, can cause serious and permanent vision loss. 2–4 There are 2 case reports of CO 2 laser-associated corneal perforation 2,3 and one report of cautery-associated corneal laceration in the literature. 4 However, there is no mention of an intraoperative diagnosis of corneal injuries in any of these reports, and all cases resulted in irreversible vision loss.…”

“…Prior literature has described ocular perforation as a rare complication during eyelid procedures. [2][3][4] Furthermore, one report detailed a case of endophthalmitis following blepharoplasty but did not report on results following vitrectomy. 5 The present study details a case of exogenous endophthalmitis related to presumed globe perforation during a bilateral upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty procedure.…”
