Corneal astigmatism in Graves' ophthalmopathy

Abstract: Purpose To describe corneal astigmatism in patients under the age of 55 years with Graves' ophthalmopathy and to compare it to a control group. Methods Retrospective, nonrandomized comparative observational case series. A total of 109 patients with inactive Graves' ophthalmopathy and 109 ageand gender-matched control individuals without Graves' ophthalmopathy were examined with manual corneal keratometry. “…Jankauskiene et al revealed that in children with thyroid eye disease and protrusion ≥ 17 mm myopia was noted more often than in control group [36]. Other studies found worsening of previously diagnosed myopia [37] and higher incidence of astigmatism in patients with TAO [38]. Refraction changes in course of thyroid gland diseases may be associated with proliferation of orbital matrix and enlargement of extraocular muscles, which cause remodeling of the eye bulb and elongation of optical axis.…”

“…There is evidence that these changes can give rise to astigmatism 1 and raised intraocular pressure (IOP). In addition, the extent of IOP elevation may correlate with the degree of proptosis.…”

“…Another study by Mombaerts et al [19] stated that higher degrees of "with the rule astigmatism" were found in patients under 55 years old who suffered Graves' ophthalmopathy. ese patients were examined clinically and by CT and were found to have fibrosis of the orbit as well as restrictive motility disorders.…”
