Cork workers? occupational asthma: lack of association with allergic sensitisation to fungi of the work environment

Abstract: Atopy does not seem to characterise occupational asthma in cork workers. Despite their long exposure to moulds, we could not find evidence of IgE sensitisation to the three most prevalent cork fungi in patients with OA, which points to the search for other causative agents, such as cork chemical compounds or contaminants.

“…Atopy is reported to increase the risk of OA in workers exposed to enzymes, 38 62 63 isocyanates, 47 64 laboratory and other animals, 50-52 64 65-74 bakery allergens, 44 75-79 and some reactive dyes. 80 Other studies show no association between atopy and OA due to exposure to cork, 81 isocyanates, 48 82 83 enzymes, 35 glutaraldehyde, 84 salmon, 85 crab, 86 hexahydrophthalic anhydride, 87 platinum salts, 61 88 and plicatic acid. 89 Atopy is associated with increased risk of sensitisation in workers exposed to enzymes, 36 86 prawn, 55 and acid anhydrides.…”

“…Segundo Winck et al (2004), a exposição dos corticeiros a fungos no seu local de trabalho pode induzir o desenvolvimento de suberose. Ambos os fungos identificados neste estudo foram também confirmados em quase todas as amostras do estudo de Prat, Ruiz-Rueda, et al, (2009).…”

“…T. viride did not produce positive skin prick reactions (Khan et al, 2009), and T. longibrachiatum did not cause allergic reactions in asthma patients (Winck et al, 2004). Results were inconclusive in the study concerning allergic effects of grass pollen infected with Cocksfoot streak virus (Pallett et al, 2009).…”

In one allergy-related study, sensitized mice received an intranasal dose of B. licheniformis, and lung histology as well as the detection of cells and cytokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were used to detect the effects of this treatment (Vogel et al, 2008).…”
