Gastrointestinal bezoars in the pediatric age group have an unusual presentation, and their clinical manifestation is mainly associ- ated with obstructive conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, and are generally made up of hair and food debris. In a smaller num- ber, it has been seen that from its usual location, which is the stomach, bezoar structures could extend into the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and even colon, giving the appearance of a “Rapunzel tail”. We present the case of a 7-year-old girl with an atypical initial presentation of Rapunzel syndrome, secondary to a trichobezoar. The patient did not have previous psychiatric history, nor reports of any disturbance at school. She was admitted to the emergency room due to upper gastrointestinal bleeding and required a subsequent transfusion of blood products. During her hospitalization, an up- per digestive endoscopy was performed, with the diagnosis of Rapunzel syndrome, in addition to the presence of two Forrest II-C, III gastric ulcers and severe erythematous gastritis in the region of the antrum and body. Medical treatment was started without suc- cess, for which the bezoar had to be surgically removed. Therefore, we want to point out the importance of deepening certain aspects such as the medical history and background in this type of patient, since it is a disorder linked to behavioral and mood alterations; likewise, remember the less frequent clinical symp- toms such as upper gastrointestinal bleeding, but which in turn can be lethal if we don’t act promptly. In the same way, the compre- hensive approach with the support of the family and the intervention of psychology and/or psychiatry is vital to prevent recurrences.

Quercus suber L. is an evergreen cork oak tree that can produce cork, one of the most important valuable natural bioresources in Portugal, with a high impact for the bioeconomy. Given its socio-economic relevance and the upcoming biotic and abiotic threats cork oak faces, it is of extreme importance that genetic conservation of its genetic variability occurs so that cork oaks can adapt to new conditions. This work represents a review of the current knowledge on Quercus suber genetic resources, focusing on the existing genetic variability and the strategies for its conservation. Furthermore, we highlight genetic knowledge on tolerance and response to abiotic and biotic stresses and cork quality, which are useful for further studies on stress response pathways and mechanisms and improvement regarding stress tolerance.

Effects of Low-Velocity-Impact on Facesheet-Core Debonding of Natural-Core Composite Sandwich Structures—A Review of Experimental Research

Sandwich composites are often used as primary load-bearing structures in various industries like aviation, wind, and marine due to their high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, but they are vulnerable to damage from Low-velocity-impact (LVI) events like dropped tools, hail, and birdstrikes. This often manifests in the form of Facesheet-Core-Debonding (FCD) and is often termed Barely-Visible-Impact-Damage (BVID), which is difficult to detect and can considerably reduce mechanical properties. In general, a balsa core sandwich is especially vulnerable to FCD under LVI as it has poorer adhesion than synthetic core materials. A cork core sandwich does show promise in absorbing LVI with low permanent indentation depth. This paper also reviews surface treatment/modification as a means of improving the adhesion of composite core and fiber materials: key concepts involved, a comparison of surface free energies of various materials, and research literature on surface modification of cork, glass, and carbon fibers. Since both balsa and cork have a relatively low surface free energy compared to other materials, this paper concludes that it may be possible to use surface modification techniques to boost adhesion and thus FCD on balsa or cork sandwich composites under LVI, which has not been covered by existing research literature.
