Core-shell nanofibers as drug delivery systems

Abstract: Core-shell nanofibers have grown in popularity over the last decade owing to their special features and their many applications in biomedicine. They can be produced by electrospinning of immiscible polymer blends or emulsions through a single nozzle or by electrospinning using a coaxial nozzle. Several of the electrospinning parameters allow great versatility for the compositions and diameters of core-shell nanofibers to be produced. Morphology of core-shell nanofibers can be investigated using transmission el… Show more

“…The use of nanofibers has been suggested for several biomedical applications, including wound dressing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering [20]. Of these, drug delivery is the most promising, whereby its advantages include high drug loading, a high incorporation efficiency, the simultaneous delivery of diverse therapeutics, an increased surface area, a good mechanical resistance, an enhanced distribution at mucosal surfaces, ease of operation, and cost effectiveness [20,21,22].…”

“…Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride-loaded electrospun polycarbonate urethane nanofiber prepared for wound dressing showed prolonged drug release [139]. Eudragit L100-55 nano-fibers incorporated with diclofenac sodium (DS) exhibited a pH-dependent drug generation pattern when used for the constant release of the anti-inflammatory agent and presented a great possibility to be employed as oral colon-targeted drug release systems [140]. In addition to drugs, vitamins have been encapsulated within electro-spun nano-fibers as transdermal delivery carriers with increased agent activity, and drug delivery systems for cancer treatment showed improved tumor suppression [141].…”

“…Although solution parameters include polymer concentration, viscosity, and conductivity, temperature and relative humidity are two factors that been classified as environmental parameters. Detailed discussion on the effects of these parameters in conventional coaxial electrospinning is not provided, as it has been comprehensively reviewed elsewhere [19,20,105]. The focus discussion of this section is shifted to advanced and complex coaxial electrospinning instead, with thorough discussion is presented in the next paragraphs.…”
