Core–shell designs of photoluminescent nanodiamonds with porous silica coatings for bioimaging and drug delivery I: fabrication

Abstract: A multifunctional core-shell nanocomposite platform consisting of a photoluminescent nanodiamond (ND) core with uniform porous silica coatings is presented. This design intended for drug delivery applications allows simultaneous stable fluorescent imaging with high loading capacity of bioactive molecules. Despite irregularly shaped starting cores, well-dispersed and uniformly shaped nanocomposite particles can be produced. Moreover, after optimization of the silica source-to-diamond ratio, the thickness of the… Show more

“…NDs were coated by a SiO 2 shell 20-90 nm thick depending on TEOS/CTAB ratio. The efficient loading of hydrophobic drug molecules on porous silica was demonstrated [152]. Photoluminescent properties originated from NV centers are preserved for SiO 2 -coated NDs.…”

“…Indeed, silica combines physical and chemical properties like its inertness with its synthesis versatility. HPHT photoluminescent NDs as well as detonation NDs were recently coated by mesoporous silica in one step [152,153]. During this synthesis, tetraethoxy orthosilicate (TEOS) was used as silica source.…”

“…Finally, core-shell multifunctional nanocomposites have been obtained by incorporating fluorescent NDs cores in silica shells. [81][82][83] ND exhibits a sharp Raman peak approximately at 1330 cm −15 which is generally well distinguished from Raman signals from biological samples. 17 20 31 Therefore, NDs can be detected in biological systems by mapping the intensity of such a characteristic Raman peak on the sample with a spatial resolution that can be as small as 100 nm.…”

“…Secondly, it is well-known that the cross-section intensity distribution of the doughnut beam has a dark region at the beam center. Nanodiamonds can be coated with a silica shell [24,33], forming a core-shell structure. When the dark region of the beam coincides with the diamond core, the heat absorption will be significantly suppressed.…”
