Creating, maintaining, or using a digital library requires the manipulation of digital documents. Information workspaces provide a visual representation allowing users to collect, organize, annotate, and author information. The Visual Knowledge Builder (VKB) helps users access, collect, annotate, and combine materials from digital libraries and other sources into a personal information workspace. VKB has been enhanced to include direct search interfaces for NSDL and Google. Users create a visualization of search results while selecting and organizing materials for their current activity. Additionally, metadata applicators have been added to VKB. This interface allows the rapid addition of metadata to documents and aids the user in the extraction of existing metadata for application to other documents. A study was performed to compare the selection and organization of documents in VKB to the commonly used tools of a Web browser and a word processor. This study shows the value of visual workspaces for such effort but points to the need for subdocument level objects, ephemeral visualizations, and support for moving from visual representations to metadata.

We describe the design, implementation, and deployment of the Comprehensive Extensible Data Documentation and Access Repository (CED 2 AR). This is a metadata repository system that allows researchers to search, browse, access, and cite confidential data and metadata through either a web-based user interface or programmatically through a search API, all the while re-reusing and linking to existing archive and provider generated metadata. CED 2 AR is distinguished from other metadata repository-based applications due to requirements that derive from its social science context. These include the need to cloak confidential data and metadata and manage complex provenance chains.

Abstract. The Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) that underlies the Web Services paradigm of computing is widely regarded as the future of distributed computing. The applicability of such an architecture for digital library systems is still uncertain, as evidenced by the fact that virtually none of the large open source projects (e.g., Greenstone, EPrints, DSpace) have adopted it for internal component structuring. In contrast, the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) has received much support in the DL community for its Protocol for Metadata Harvesting, one that in principle falls within the scope of SOA. As a natural extension, the Open Digital Library project carried the principles of the OAI forward into a set of experimental derived and related protocols to create a testbed for component-based digital library experiments. This paper discusses a series of experiments with these components to confirm that SOA and a service-oriented component architecture is indeed applicable to digital library systems, by evaluating issues of simplicity and understandability, reusability, extensibility and performance.
