Core services in the architecture of the national science digital library (NSDL)

Abstract: We describe the core components of the architecture for the National Science Digital Library (NSDL). Over time the NSDL will include heterogeneous users, content, and services. To accommodate this, a design for a technical and organization infrastructure has been formulated based on the notion of a spectrum of interoperability. This paper describes the first phase of the interoperability infrastructure including the metadata repository, search and discovery services, rights management services, and user interf… Show more

“…Bypassing this effort would enable users to move more easily from location into comprehension and modification. For this reason, National Science Digital Library (NSDL) [8] and Google searches are integrated into VKB. So users can do their searches and immediately begin processing the results without having to transfer the links as described above.…”

“…These information objects contain the URLs and metadata of the source documents and are ordered by their search ranking. With NSDL's more comprehensive set of metadata [8], NSDL search results are visually enhanced to convey particular aspects of the metadata. The current visual encoding uses symbol color, border color, and border width to indicate source library, material type (text, image, video, etc), and a number of material types respectively.…”

“…Other examples of this wellknow digital library paradigm include DataONE [29], NSDL [22], OAIster [13], and Public Library of America [36]. In this section we describe three aspects of the social science data context that distinguish CED 2 AR from other similar applications.…”

“…This in itself indicates the ease with which serviceoriented components can be replaced in a system whose requirements change over time. [5] -is the computing segment of NSF's NSDL -the National Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Digital Library [8]. CITIDEL is building a user portal to provide access to computing-related resources garnered from various sources using metadata harvesting wherever possible.…”
