“…Furthermore, individuals’ life satisfaction depends not only on objective metrics, such as health and economic status, but on various subjective experiences that vary by individual ( Reinecke and Trepte, 2014 ; Dienlin et al, 2017 ). Loneliness is a negative emotional response to a discrepancy between the desired and achieved quality of social interactions, which can lead to low life satisfaction ( Jiang et al, 2017 ; Unanue et al, 2017 ).…”

“…This sense of belonging may make them feel that they are not isolated, which is related less loneliness ( Satici, 2018 ); rather, that they have numerous friends. With the resulting positive life attitude, they tend to have relatively high life satisfaction ( Jiang et al, 2017 ; Yildiz, 2017 ). Therefore, loneliness may have a positive mediating effect on the association between social networking site use and life satisfaction.…”

“…Our study contributes to the SCCT literature with engineering students by focusing on a Latina/o student sample and using latent growth modeling (LGM) to assess both changes in the variables (perceived supports, perceived barriers, and coping efficacy) and longitudinal associations among these variables with life satisfaction. Pursuing training in a White-dominated field such as engineering may present a challenging context for students from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups where they may encounter elevated barriers and limited support for their educational pursuits; research suggests that these types of academic environments may lower students’ life satisfaction (Jiang et al, 2017; Luzzo & McWhirter, 2001). Thus, in line with scholars who have highlighted the link between career development and overall well-being (Jiang et al, 2017; Lent & Brown, 2008), we seek to understand the role of environmental factors (i.e., supports and barriers) on Latina/o engineering students’ life satisfaction and the mediating role of coping efficacy in this relation.…”

“…As mentioned earlier, domain satisfaction is an important pathway for enhancing life satisfaction, and several studies with culturally diverse college students have found a positive relation between academic satisfaction and life satisfaction (Lent et al, 2011; Lent et al, 2017; Lent, Taveira, & Lobo, 2012; Lent et al, 2014; Lent, Taveira, Sheu, & Singley, 2009; Ojeda, Flores, & Navarro, 2011). Recent research with college students outside of the engineering domain has identified career support (Jiang et al, 2017) as a predictor of life satisfaction and coping efficacy (Wright, Firsick, Kacmarski, & Jenkins-Guarnieri, 2017) as a mediating variable in the relationship between attachment and life satisfaction. We explore whether the findings of these recent studies (Jiang et al, 2017; Wright et al, 2017) extend to the engineering domain.…”
