CORBA-based substation automation systems

Abstract: This paper describes the implementation of the emerging IEC-61850 standard for automation systems using a CORBA middleware as communication mechanism. This standard specifies communication mechanisms for automation systems in electric substations. CORBA-based implementations of control systems open new perspectives for advanced control, because they ease the development of new functionality and enhance evolvavility of applications. Real-time CORBA enables the modular development of new control systems and the … Show more

“…For the server part, instead of using proprietary hardware (with a proprietary operating system), we have decided to use an openly available board, i.e., a Raspberry Pi 3 [46]. 8 Raspberry Pi boards have been used in industrial environments for prototype and lab testing, and are currently expanding to real-world industrial deployments as well 9 .…”

“…The IEC 61850 standard proposes to use the Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) as applicationlayer protocol, but it also encourages to use other protocols providing the freedom to developers to choose the most suitable for each scenario. The same applies to other standards such as IEC 61400 that proposes Web-Services (WS) -Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) for its mapping [8]; in addition to the IEC recommendations, several other mappings have been proposed: Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) [9], combining CORBA and Data Distribution Service (DDS) [10], [11] and applying DDS [12]. Using Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) was first proposed in [13] and later expanded in [14].…”

“…Ref. [69] is one of the first attempts to map IEC 61850 on IoT protocol, CORBA, for SAS. However, security issues and satisfactory performance only in low-speed networks are weak points that make CORBA the unsuitable choice for time-critical and sensitive applications.…”

“…A new generation of manufacturing systems referred to as "intelligent manufacturing systems" and "agentoriented manufacturing" paradigm have been extensively studied in recent years [2][3][4][5]. There is a tendency to use intelligent, programmable I/O devices connected directly to sensors and actuators interconnected by peer-to-peer networks [6][7][8].…”
