Coralline Hydroxyapatite Orbital Implant (Bio-Eye): Experience with 158 Patients

Abstract: The Bio-Eye orbital implant represents a porous orbital implant that is biocompatible with orbital tissues and allows fibrovascular ingrowth and improved motility when coupled to the overlying artificial eye. It is more expensive than other commercially available porous orbital implants, such as synthetic FCI3 HA, porous polyethylene (Medpor), and aluminum oxide (Bioceramic) implant. Problems encountered with its use are similar to those problems seen in patients with the synthetic FCI3 hydroxyapatite and alum… Show more

“…[14] The new porous silicone implant in this study has the limitation that a peg cannot be applied to the implant, due to the lack of implant support. However, the importance of pegging in orbital implant surgery have been questioned, after post-pegging implant exposure was observed in 29.2% of porous polyethylene implants [13]. There may be a general trend of not pegging orbital implants.…”

“…Ко-ралловый имплантат представляет собой сферу диаметром 16-22 мм с сообщающимися порами диаметром 150-500 мкм, которые образуют ла-биринтно-арочную сеть, напоминающую систему гаверсовых каналов компактной кости человека [42]. Благодаря уникальным особенностям строе-ния сосуды и соединительная ткань быстро про-растают всю его толщу и формируют интегриро-ванный имплантат [43].…”

“…For example, bulk materials, available in dense and porous forms, are used for alveolar ridge augmentation, immediate tooth replacement and maxillofacial reconstruction [64,377]. Other examples include burrhole buttons [505], orbital implants (Bio-Eye ® ) [506][507][508][509], other ophthalmic applications [510,511], increment of the hearing ossicles, spine fusion and repair of bone defects [512,513]. In order to permit growth of new bone into defects, a suitable bioresorbable material should fill these defects, otherwise ingrowth of fibrous tissue might prevent bone formation within the defects.…”
