Coral Snake Mimicry: Does It Occur?

Abstract: Field observations and experimental evidence refute previous objections to the coral snake mimicry hypothesis. Concordant color pattern variation spanning hundreds of miles and several presumed venomous models strongly suggests that several harmless or mildly venomous colubrid snakes are indeed mimics of highly venomous elapids.

“…Batesian polymorphism is suggested to distribute warning signal degradation over several defended model species, enabling the mimic to increase in abundance. Reported accounts of such mimetic polymorphism, however, are relatively rare 6 and unknown in vertebrate mimicry systems 11,12 .Here we investigate a mimicry system that is inconsistent with the predictions of frequency dependence. We examine a poison-frog mimicry complex composed of two parapatric models and a geographically varying mimic (Fig.…”

“…Predator avoidance of the characteristic, brightly coloured banding of neotropical coral snakes (Micrurus, Micruroides) has been demonstrated in field experiments (Brodie 1993;Brodie & Janzen 1995), and appears to be innate in some generalist predatory birds (Smith 1975(Smith , 1977. These snakes form the focus of extensive mimicry rings (Greene & McDiarmid 1981;Brodie & Brodie 2004).…”

“…We studied these issues in a well-documented Batesian mimicry complex (Greene & McDiarmid 1981;Pfennig et al 2001;Brodie & Brodie 2004;, 2008. We begin by presenting a phylogenetic analysis of colour-pattern evolution, which strongly suggests that mimics evolved from cryptic forms in our study system.…”
