Glossary of Terms extraction from textual requirements is an important step in ontology engineering methodologies. Although initially it was intended to be performed manually, last years have shown that some degree of automatization is possible. Based on these promising approaches, we introduce a novel, human interpretable, rule-based method named ReqTagger, which can extract candidates for ontology entities (classes or instances) and relations (data or object properties) from textual requirements automatically. We compare ReqTagger to existing automatic methods on an evaluation benchmark consisting of over 550 requirements and tagged with over 1700 entities and relations expected to be extracted. We discuss the quality of ReqTagger and provide details showing why it outperforms other methods. We also publish both the evaluation dataset and the implementation of ReqTagger.

Building an ontology is not only a time-consuming process, but it is also confusing, especially for beginners and the inexperienced. Although ontology developers can take the help of domain experts in building an ontology, they are not readily available in several cases for a variety of reasons. Ontology developers have to grapple with several questions related to the choice of classes, properties, and the axioms that should be included. Apart from this, there are aspects such as modularity and reusability that should be taken care of. From among the thousands of publicly available ontologies and vocabularies in repositories such as Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV) and BioPortal, it is hard to know the terms (classes and properties) that can be reused in the development of an ontology. A similar problem exists in implementing the right set of ontology design patterns (ODPs) from among the several available. Generally, ontology developers make use of their experience in handling these issues, and the inexperienced ones have a hard time. In order to bridge this gap, we propose a tool named OntoSeer, that monitors the ontology development process and provides suggestions in real-time to improve the quality of the ontology under development. It can provide suggestions on the naming conventions to follow, vocabulary to reuse, ODPs to implement, and axioms to be added to the ontology. OntoSeer has been implemented as a Protégé plug-in.

Ontology authoring is a complicated and error-prone process since the knowledge being modelled is expressed using logic-based formalisms, in which logical consequences of the knowledge have to be foreseen. Many approaches intended to make this task easier, use competency questions (CQs), being questions expressed in natural language to trace both the correctness and completeness of the ontology at a given time. However, CQs hold so-called presuppositions that have to be satisfied by the ontology to obtain meaningful answers from CQs. Moreover, CQs have to be expressed using a formal language, like ontology query language (SPARQL-OWL), to query the ontology. In this paper, we propose an extension of test-driven ontology development approach by formalization of presupposition satisfaction tests in terms of SPARQL-OWL queries, as well as providing translations of CQs into SPARQL-OWL queries if presupposition tests are passed. We provide a detailed description of the proposed framework and how to incorporate such tests in the workflow of test-driven development of ontologies. It is the first framework available for formalization of SPARQL-OWL queries out of CQs with their presupposition tests.
