Coppice Forest Management Planning and the Regeneration Potential of Pure and Mixed Oak Coppice Forests in North Macedonia

Abstract: Background and Purpose: Coppicing is the most widely used silvicultural system in North Macedonia and coppice forests together with shrubs cover cca. 69% of the forest cover area. Pure and mixed stands of oak coppice forests alone cover about 50% of the total forest area subject to current Forest Management Plans. In general, coppices are routinely managed, especially when coppicing as a system is planned to be continued. However, sustainability can be threatened if attention is not paid regarding the age of t… Show more

“…Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania and partially Croatia, manage beech forests by group selection and/or selection systems, which has preserved their natural form to a large extent [78]. While in Central and North Europe coppice forests comprise just a small share of the total forest area, this forest type covers a large part of the forest area in some countries of SE Europe, such as North Macedonia 59%, Serbia 65% and Greece 65% [79,80].…”

“…Plots on top can be classified within sub-Mediterranean hop hornbeam-pubescent oak (Ostrya carpinifolia-Quercus pubescens) forests [73] dominated by caespitose phanerophytes that often build coppiced forests [74]. Due to the open canopy, a well-developed herb layer can be found dominated by caespitose hemicryptophytes (graminoids).…”
