Copper nanoparticles synthesized by hydroxyl ion assisted alcohol reduction for conducting ink

Abstract: A hydroxyl ion assisted alcohol reduction method has been applied for the preparation of copper nanoparticles with an average diameter of 10.5 nm and narrow size distribution. The addition of specific amounts of hydroxyl ions to the alcoholic solution is the key to enhance the reducing potential of alcohols to obtain metal copper from their salts even with 1-butanol. The synthesis of copper metal was realized through intermediate steps corresponding to the formation of copper oxides (CuO and Cu 2 O). The obtai… Show more

“…After 100 min, at 182°C, the color changed from orange to red and a new absorption peak appeared at 570 nm. This could be as a consequence of Cu 2 O reduction to metallic Cu seeds [32]. The reduction reaction from Cu 2 O to Cu was relatively faster and the Cu 2 O absorption peak disappeared totally in 10 minutes leaving the peak corresponding to Cu NWs at 575 nm [21].…”

“…Cu 2 O and Cu NPs possess localized surface plasmon resonance at around 400 to 700 nm [32], which depends on the particle size and morphology. Thus, the progression of the reaction Cu 2+ → Cu + → Cu 0 during heating at 182°C at different reaction times was analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy ( Figure 5).…”

“…Over the past decade the polyol process has been used to synthesize metallic nanoparticles such as Pt [132,133], Pd [88,134], Au [135], Fe [136], Ni [137,138], Co [139], Ag [140,141], Cu [142,143], Sn [144], and Rh [73]. Platinum is one of the most active metal catalysts toward many electrochemical reactions, such as oxidation of small molecules and reduction of molecular oxygen in PEMFC.…”

“…Among the many important applications for printed electronics are photovoltaic devices 1 , sensors 2 , displays 3 and radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags 4 . Many types of functional materials can be formulated into printable inks, including electrically conducting 5 , semiconducting 6 and insulating materials 7 , as well as materials with magnetic 8 , optical 9 , chemical 10 or biological 11 functions. When comparing printing methods, inkjet allows comparably small feature size, less than 40 µm on some substrates 12 .…”
