Copper Nanoparticles Differentially Target Testis of the Catfish, Clarias batrachus: In vivo and In vitro Study

Abstract: Present study examined the impact of copper (Cu) as nanoparticle (Cu-NPs) and soluble form (CuSO 4 ) in adult male catfish Clarias batrachus. Following treatment, upregulation of transcripts of several testis-related genes and increased androgen levels were evident. Though profound promotional effect was seen at gene and androgen levels, structural analysis revealed completely different scenario. Histological observations of testis showed disruption of basal lamina, distinct spermatogonium, and enlarged sperma… Show more

“…Cu nanoparticles were introduced to Clarias bathrachus, a catfish species, resulting in damage to the basal lamina of the testicular tissue. This damage led to the presence of different types of spermatogonia and enlargement of spermatocytes (Murugananthkumar, Rajesh et al 2016). Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is widely recognized as the primary experimental fish in aquatic studies.…”

“…CuO-NPs had negative impacts on the freshwater organisms and Hyphessobrycon eques , specifically on feeding, reproduction, and survival, with an increase in ROS, representing the potential CuO-NP effect on fresh water species [ 174 ]. In another study, CuNPs and CuSO 4 were examined with adult male catfish (Clarias batrachus) , where testis-related genes showed regulation, an increase in the level of androgens, and disruption in the structural analysis [ 175 ].…”

“…Toxic effects of nano copper were also prominent in crustaceans [38]. It can also change movement parameters of fish spermatozoa as a study on O. mykiss shows [39] and cause critical changes in the reproductive organs and lower the survival rate of larvae and cause developmental damage [40][41][42]. Changes in gene expression induced by nano copper were tested among the other parameters as well.…”
