Early Railway Chemistry and Its Legacy

This chapter details the major research projects conducted by the railway chemists that had an impact on railway engineering and practice. The chemists worked on the structural integrity of metals, with particular reference to the problem of rails breaking in service and the failure of copper components of locomotives. Important contributions were also made to the theory and practice of lubrication, and a new method of water softening was developed. Other projects included the composition of paints and the design of signal lamps.
