Copper(II)–Thymine Coordination Polymer Nanoribbons as Potential Oligonucleotide Nanocarriers

Abstract: The direct reaction between copper nitrate,thymine-1-acetic acid, and 4,4'-bipyridine in water leads to the formation of ab lue colloid comprising uniform crystalline nanoribbons (length > 1 mm; width ca. 150-185 nm;d iameter ca. 15-60 nm) of ac oordination polymer.T he polymer displays at hymine-based structure freely available for supramolecular interactions.T hese nanostructures show significant selective interaction with single-stranded oligonucleotides based on adenine.R emarkably,t hey present lowc ell t… Show more

“…More recently, perspectives on the use of metal–organic colloids are changing, as it has been demonstrated by Vegas et al [ 18 ], who showed the synthesis of a 1D-Cu(II) antiferromagnetic coordination polymer (CP) with modified thymine (thymine-1-acetic acid, TAcOH). Thanks to the insolubility in the aqueous medium where it is obtained, this 1D-CP can be generated in nanoribbons forming a stable colloidal suspension for long periods.…”

“…In comparison with other natural nucleobases, the coordination chemistry of thymine-based metal complexes has been much less investigated. Most of the thymine-containing complexes have been prepared with the nucleobase in form of thyminate anion, that is, releasing one or two protons of its N-H groups, whereas the reported examples obtained with the thymine molecule acting through its carbonyl groups as a neutral ligand toward the metal are much scarcer [4][5][6][7]. In that respect, theoretical studies have been performed on metal clusters to investigate preferential binding sites of the thymine molecule [8].…”
