Copper(II)−Alizarin Red S Complex as an Efficient Chemiluminescent Probe for the Detection of Human Serum Proteins after Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis

Abstract: A novel chemiluminescent probe, copper(II)-Alizarin Red S (ARS) complex, for the detection of human serum proteins after polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) is described. The detection is based on the binding of the copper(II)-ARS complex to proteins and the catalytic activity of copper(II) in the luminol-hydrogen peroxide chemiluminescence (CL) system. Various proteins are directly detected in polyacrylamide gels, avoiding tedious transferring procedures. In the present study, the possible reaction mech… Show more

“…A method for electric transfer of analytes from the one-dimensional gel electrophoresis (1-DE) gel to a MALDI target plate has been developed . The gels may be stained with Coomasie brilliant blue, mono or diamine silver, nile red, zinc, or many novel reagents (Diezel, Kopperschlager, & Hofmann, 1972;Dionne et al, 1994;Fernandez-Patron et al, 1995;Wang et al, 2008e).…”

“…Alizarin red S with the chemical name of 1,2-dihydroxy-9,10-anthraquinone has a flat heterocyclic ring structure, which has been widely used in biological sciences, photochemicals and environmental studies involved with toxic contaminants [20,21]. ARS has been widely used as a sensor for the detection of metal ions and biomolecules because of high fluorescence intensity [22,23].…”

“…However, most publications concerned specifically with sulphonated alizarine (ARS) are experimental studies and no calculations were made on its spectral properties [7,[16][17][18][19]. There are articles and reviews dedicated to the testing the TDDFT performance of different xc-functionals which include anthraquinone derivatives [9-12, 20, 21].…”
