Copper electrowinning using spouted-bed electrodes: Part I. Experiments with oxygen evolution or matte oxidation at the anode

Abstract: A spouted-bed electrode (SBE) is one form of a class of electrodes called "particulate electrodes." The best known such electrode is the fluidized-bed electrode (FBE) that, despite early promise, has found only limited application in the deposition of metals from solution. The novel SBE is a cathode where copper is deposited at a high-current density in a slowly moving bed of copper particles. The article describes an investigation at the University of California, Berkeley into the spouted-bed electrowinning o… Show more

“…12,13,14,15 Nickel electrodeposition in the same experimental apparatus used here has also been investigated in our laboratory. 16 Here we present results on the co-electrodeposition of copper and nickel from mixtures in acidic solutions in a spouted electrochemical reactor.…”

“…There are relatively few studies in the literature on similar devices. Copper electrowinning from acidic solutions was examined in small, related devices by Jiricny et al [6], Stankovic and Stankovic [7], Masterson and Evans [8], and Scott [9]. Also, Evans and coworkers reported on zinc electrowinning in a spouted bed electrode [10].…”
