Recent Progress of Metal–Air Batteries—A Mini Review

With the ever-increasing demand for power sources of high energy density and stability for emergent electrical vehicles and portable electronic devices, rechargeable batteries (such as lithium-ion batteries, fuel batteries, and metal–air batteries) have attracted extensive interests. Among the emerging battery technologies, metal–air batteries (MABs) are under intense research and development focus due to their high theoretical energy density and high level of safety. Although significant progress has been achieved in improving battery performance in the past decade, there are still numerous technical challenges to overcome for commercialization. Herein, this mini-review summarizes major issues vital to MABs, including progress on packaging and crucial manufacturing technologies for cathode, anode, and electrolyte. Future trends and prospects of advanced MABs by additive manufacturing and nanoengineering are also discussed.

A SFCW harmonic radar system for maritime search and rescue using passive and active tags

This paper introduces a new maritime search and rescue system based on S-band illumination harmonic radar (HR). Passive and active tags have been developed and tested while attached to life jackets and a small boat. In this demonstration test carried out on the Baltic Sea, the system was able to detect and range the active tags up to a distance of 5800 m using an illumination signal transmit-power of 100 W. Special attention is given to the development, performance, and conceptual differences between passive and active tags used in the system. Guidelines for achieving a high HR dynamic range, including a system components description, are given and a comparison with other HR systems is performed. System integration with a commercial maritime X-band navigation radar is shown to demonstrate a solution for rapid search and rescue response and quick localization.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) cathode materials were synthesized by the solvothermal method with the assistance of different surfactants. The influences of polyethylene glycol 2000 (PEG 2000), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) on the microstructure and electrochemical performance of LiFePO 4 were investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and charge/discharge measurements. The particle size of the LiFePO 4 synthesized with the assistance of PEG was uniform and showed a flat rhombohedron-like shape. The initial discharge specific capacity is up to 122.80 mAh/g with an initial coulombic efficiency of 95.50% at 0.1C. LiFePO 4 synthesized with PVP-assisted presents a porous structure with an initial discharge specific capacity of 91.01 mAh/g. LiFePO 4 synthesized with CTAB-assisted shows a flower-like morphology with an initial discharge specific capacity of 100.44 mAh/g. Though the initial discharge capacities of the LiFePO 4 materials prepared with the assistance of CTAB and PVP are lower than those of the LiFePO 4 prepared without the assistance of surfactant, the two materials exhibited excellent cyclic stability at 0.1C.
