Copper chloride complexes with substituted 4′-phenyl-terpyridine ligands: synthesis, characterization, antiproliferative activities and DNA interactions

Abstract: Eleven copper chloride complexes (1–11) with 4′-(4′-substituted-phenyl)-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine complexes bearing hydrogen (L1), cyano (L2), p-hydroxyl (L3), m-hydroxyl (L4), o-hydroxyl (L5), methoxyl (L6), iodo (L7), bromo (L8), chloro (L9), fluoro (L10) or...

“…The structures of the target compounds were confirmed by IR, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Their IR spectra ( Figures S1–S11 ) display the expected bands [ 43 , 64 , 65 ]. Namely, multiple bands in the range of 1650–1401 cm −1 and 1263–1011 cm −1 were observed for the C=C stretch and for in-plane C–H bending vibrations, as well as bands in the range of 911–673 cm −1 for out-of-plane C–H bending vibrations.…”

“…In order to clarify the effect of oxygen-containing substituent modification on the anticancer activity of terpyridine complexes, we summarized the anticancer activities of a total of 28 substituted terpyridine complexes against different cancer cells in Figure 7 from this work and previously reported works [ 44 , 65 ]. When the average activity of the non-oxygen-containing substituent-modified terpyridine complexes is compared with that of the terpyridine complexes modified with oxygen-containing substituents, we can clearly find that oxygen-containing substituents brought a significant increase in anticancer activity.…”

“…Terpyridine not only has a strong fluorescence signal under suitable excitation conditions, but also is used as a general ligand to form transition metal complexes; this provides a new idea for the preparation of living cell fluorescent imaging biomaterials [ 27 , 28 ]. After the coordination of ligands with metal ions, the binding mode and ability of the metal complexes with the target are affected by the structural effect of the ligands and the electronic effect of the metal ions, and as the introduction of metal ions can produce a synergistic effect, the activity of the complex is increased [ 29 ]. On the other hand, some transition metal ions are very important to the human body, for example, zinc plays an indispensable role in many life processes: it can promote the metabolism of various substances in the body, promote the proliferation of the lymphatic system, enhance the resistance to viruses and bacteria, etc.…”

“…[29][30][31][32][33] In the last years, the anticancer activity of tpy and its coordination compounds has also been reported. [34][35][36][37][38][39] Herein, we report a new multi-cavity and multi-metal system based on the coordination of tpy functionalized CD polymers. Particularly we functionalized a cross-linked β-CD polymer with tpy moieties to exploit the coordination ability of tpy in an aqueous solution.…”
