Introduction and objective. Lithium and selenium have been the subjects of extensive research for many years. Concern about the physiological action of these elements results from the application of lithium in medicine, as well as the beneficial influence of selenium supplementation in different pathological states. However, little data are available concerning their effect on the homeostasis of essential microelements in organs. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the influence of lithium and/or selenium administration on homeostasis of iron, zinc, copper and manganese in the liver of rats. Materials and method. The experiment was carried on 24 male Wistar rats (4 groups of 6 animals) subjected to the treatment with: group I (control) -saline; group II -lithium carbonate at a dose of 2.7 mg Li/kg b.w.; group III -sodium selenite at a dose of 0.5 mg Se/kg b.w.; group IV -both lithium carbonate and sodium selenite at the doses mentioned above. Administration was performed for 6 weeks, once a day by stomach tube, in the form of water solutions. Results. The tissue content of zinc, iron and manganese showed no statistical differences among the studied groups. Zn was slightly decreased in group III vs. control and group II. Fe was insignificantly enhanced in groups II and IV vs. control. Mn in group IV was slightly increased vs. groups II and III. Cu in group III was significantly decreased vs. group IV and slightly depleted vs. groups I and II. Conclusion. With the exception of Cu in the Se-treated group, lithium and/or selenium did not affect the studied microelements' liver homeostasis in a significant way. These results may contribute to the knowledge of essential microelements homeostasis in human organisms undergoing lithium therapy, and/or selenium supplementation.

A B S T R A C TBackground: Micronutrient replacement is done indiscriminately, without recourse to peculiar socioeconomic and sociodemographic variables. Particularly, the relationship between parity, body weight, and some micronutrients has received minimal attention in Nigeria. Aim: To determine the relationship between parity, body weight, and some micronutrients during pregnancy. Subjects and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving 130 pregnant women and 30 nonpregnant control. They were recruited from two health care facilities in Nigeria and grouped into nulliparous and multiparous. After a 24-h dietary recall, the weight (W) and height (H) were measured. The body mass index (BMI) (W in kg/H in m 2 ) was calculated. Serum copper and zinc were estimated using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results: Multiparous nonpregnant subjects parity=3.0 (0.58) had higher weight (P=0.037) and BMI (P=0.035) than their nulliparous counterparts (parity=0). In addition, there were no significant difference in Cu and zinc levels between the two groups (P=0.243 and 0.402, respectively). Expectedly, weight and BMI increased as pregnancy progressed. There was no significant difference in Cu levels between the three trimesters in the nulliparous pregnant and multiparous pregnant subjects. In the pregnant nulliparous subjects, the Zn levels of the 2 nd and 3 rd trimesters were significantly lower than that of the nonpregnant nulliparous subjects (P<0.001 and 0.039, respectively). However, in multiparous pregnant subjects, only the 3 rd trimester Zn level was significantly lower than that of the nonpregnant controls (P=0.017). Conclusion: Pregnancy weight gain is more pronounced in multiparous than nulliparous women. This parity-related pattern only affects the serum zinc levels, a situation that should be taken into consideration when formulating policies for nutritional replacement.

Toxic metals are part of the most important groups of environmental pollutants that can bind to vital cellular components and interfere with their functions via inhalation, foods, water etc. The serum levels of toxic metals (lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic) in pregnant women with history of pregnancy complications, pregnant women without history of pregnancy complication and non-pregnant women in Benin City, South -South Nigeria was investigated in this paper, with total of 135 healthy women comprising of 45 pregnant women with history of previous pregnancy complications, 45 pregnant women without history of pregnancy complications and 45 non-pregnant women without history of pregnancy complications (controls). Some demographic characteristics and 4ml of blood samples were obtained from each subject for the analysis of lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic by standard methods. Pregnant women with history of pregnancy complications recorded a highly significant increase in the toxic metal (lead) mean value of 25.81µg/dl as against 23.70µg/dl for pregnant women without history of pregnancy complications and 11.23µg/dl for non-pregnant (control) women without history of pregnancy complications as well as significant increases in the mean values of other toxic metals (mercury, cadmium and arsenic) compared with controls (p<0.001). The selected toxic metals (Pb, Hg, Cd and As) may be involved in the development of pregnancy complications among pregnant women in Benin City, South-South Nigeria. Lead in particular may pose threat to mothers and fetuses as its mean values in the two groups of pregnant women were well above normal. © JASEM http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/jasem.v20i1.1
