Coping styles in youths with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

Abstract: The relationships between two coping styles (i.e., use of personal and interpersonal resources; ventilation and avoidance) and two health outcomes (i.e., adherence and metabolic control) were evaluated in 135 youths with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Individual characteristics (i.e., age, duration of illness) and contextual variables (i.e., stress, family relations) were used to predict coping styles. Poor adherence to treatment, older adolescent age, and long duration of IDDM were correlated wit… Show more

“…Young adults show decreased adherence to their treatment compared with younger and older age groups (14). The level of adherence measured by the Self-Care Adherence Inventory has been found to be directly linked to metabolic control in different age groups (15)(16)(17). Improved adherence has also been observed with increased diabetes-specific social (18) and family (19,20) support.…”

“…[12,13]. This is perhaps a consequence of the fact that much of the work in this area has been in families where problems were evident [14,15], and it may be that more optimal functioning is associated with patterns of family dynamics that are more normative.…”

“…As the present study utilized a rather limited age range (13-18 years), no significant association was found between coping styles and age when controlling for sex (data not shown). In addition, Hanson et al (6) reported that although poor adherence to treatment often has been associated with developmental problems in adolescence, it was the maladaptive coping styles rather than age that predicted poor adherence to treatment.…”

“…In addition, across different chronic diseases, it has been suggested that problemfocused coping is generally associated with better adjustment (5). In adolescents with diabetes, avoidance coping and venting emotions have been found to predict poor illness-specific self-care behavior but were unrelated to metabolic control (6). On the other hand, ways of coping with stress have also been identified as important factors in relation to metabolic control.…”
