Abstract.A coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical modelling is developed to address main mechanisms that drive the particulate organic carbon (POC) deposition in the Gulf of Lions (NW-Mediterranean). Low-salinity water (LSW, salinity <37.5) lenses detached from the Rhone River plume under specific wind conditions tend to favour the biological productivity and provide a good opportunity for validating a planktonic ecosystem modelling. A specific calibration dedicated to river plume ecosystems is then proposed and validated using in situ measurements within such LSW lens (BIOPRHOFI cruise -May 2006) and on the Gulf of Lions. During spring 2006, the POC deposition is maximal on the prodelta area and within the coastal area in the Gulf of Lions. Organic detritus mostly contribute to the total POC deposition (82-92 %) whereas the contribution of living organisms (microphytoplankton) appears lower than 17 %. Exploring both influences of terrestrial inputs from the Rhone River and planktonic ecosystems on the POC deposition on the shelf, we estimated that the contribution of terrestrial POM inputs to the total POC deposition is lower than 17 % at the shelf scale during the study period, with maxima during peak discharges of the Rhone River. The main deposition area of terrestrial POC is found in the vicinity of the river mouth in agreement with sediment data. On the other hand, a remarkable influence of marine biological processes on the POC deposition is highlighted further on the shelf (from 60 to 80 m depth). A tight feedback between zooplankton and POM contents in the water column is proposed to explain Correspondence to: P. A. Auger (pierre-amael.auger@aero.obs-mip.fr) the control of POC deposition by zooplankton: terrestrial POM inputs would favour the development of living organisms through photosynthesis and grazing processes increasing the retention of organic matter within the food web. By favouring the development of large-sized zooplankton, LSW lenses may have paradoxically a negative impact on the carbon deposition on the shelf. In the same way, peak discharges of the Rhone River finally increase the gradient of POC deposition between the prodelta and the offshore area in the Gulf of Lions. The biogenic elements from the Rhone River are then exported further offshore through advection of zooplankton communities on the Gulf of Lions shelf.

The purpose of this work was to study the composition and abundance of the mesozooplankton at two stations at the continental shelf off Sergipe. At each station, oblique plankton tows were carried using plankton nets with 200 µm mesh size, in six hours intervals during three consecutive days. One hundred and three taxa were identified and Copepoda was the dominant group with fifty one species. The mesozooplankton assemblage was composed by coastal, neritic and oceanic tropical species. There were significant differences in composition and abundance between the two studied stations (p<0,05) but not between tidal stages. At station 1, the most abundant species were Creseis acicula, Oikopleura spp., Temora stylifera, Paracalanus quasimodo and Aglaura hemistoma, and at station 2 Paracalanus quasimodo, Paracalanus spp., Siphonophora, Gastropoda and Decapoda larvae. Coastal species such as Parvocalanus crassirostris, Acartia lilljeborgi, Euterpina acutifrons and Corycaeus giesbrechti occurred only at the last station, located close to the mouth of the São Francisco River, where surface salinity and transparency values were low. In this station the salinity average value at surface was 30,8±1,9 and at the bottom layer was 35.0±0.3 PSU. Mesozooplanhton density values ranged between 124 ind.m -3 and 2,658 ind.m -3 at station 1, and from 734 ind.m -3 to 3,061 ind.m -3 at station 2. A Monte Carlo test based on a canonical ordination revelead that local depth and water transparency were significantly correlated to the mesozooplankton distribution.Key words: zooplankton community, Copepoda, shelf off Sergipe, tropical. DISTRIBUIÇÃO DO MESOZOOPLÂNCTON NA PLATAFORMA CONTINENTAL DE SERGIPE, BRASIL RESUMOA proposta desse trabalho foi estudar a composição e abundância do mesozooplâncton em duas estações, na plataforma continental de Sergipe. Em cada estação, arrastos oblíquos de plâncton foram feitos utilizando-se uma rede de plâncton de 200 µm de abertura de malha, em intervalos de seis horas, durante três dias consecutivos. Cento e três táxons foram identificados e Copepoda foi o grupo dominante com cinqüenta e uma espécies. A assembléia mesozooplanctônica foi composta por espécies tropicais costeiras, neríticas e oceânicas. Houve diferença significativa na composição e abundância entre as duas estações estudadas (p<0,05), mas não entre os estágios tidais. Na estação 1 as espécies mais abundantes foram Creseis acicula, Oikopleura spp., Temora stylifera, Paracalanus quasimodo e Aglaura hemistoma e na estação 2, Paracalanus quasimodo, Paracalanus spp., Siphonophora e larvas de Gastropoda e Decapoda.

Zooplankton communities in temperate climates exhibit well documented seasonal variability. The reasons proposed to explain this kind of behaviour range from the effect of physical-chemical conditions (salinity, nutrients, temperature) growth rates, mortality, migration rates, food availability and predation. It is noticeable that the majority of the factors mentioned are external to the organisms, being environmental factors responsible for time dependent changes in zooplankton abundance. A question may arise from this conclusion, namely, "Could zooplankton blooms, in temperate climates, be mainly modelled by the internal physiological predispositions of the individual organisms?" Or, in a more "functional" formulation, "Could gonads be the baseline regulators of zooplankton abundance?". This study answers this pertinent question, assuming as a basic assumption that the reproductive potential of these organisms is constant, being controlled by extrinsic factors. For this purpose, histological and histochemical techniques were applied to the mysid Mesopodopsis slabberi, a key species in the Mondego River estuary, in order to establish a scale of gonadic development that would allow comparisons between high and low density periods. Histology reveals itself as the ideal base to establish a tool for the evaluation of the gonadic masses by allowing to calculate oocyte dimensions (trough biometry) and determine its maturity status through calculation of the N/C ratio and histochemical analysis (PAS and Tetrazonium reaction for proteins). Upon creation, validation and application of the formerly described tool, the most prominent result emerging from this study is the confirmation of the initial assumption: seasonal variability in zooplankton densities reflects advantageous or disadvantageous external factors acting over a latent reproductive potential. Moreover, this work confirms histology and histochemistry as valuable approaches to the determination of planktonic ecophysiological processes.
