The stability of the species composition of calanoid copepods was investigated off southern California using samples collected during spring by the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) from 1951 through 1999. The region was consistently dominated in spring by 3 species, Calanus pacificus, Metridia pacifica and Pleuromamma borealis, which together accounted for 77% of the total on average. Four other categories each usually accounted for 3 to 7% of the total, but were occasionally much more abundant. All other species each generally made up less than 1% of the total. Species composition was compared between pairs of cruises using the percent similarity index (PSI). Species composition was found to be stable over the 49 yr covered by the study. Mean PSI values for each cruise were consistently high, except for 6 anomalous years, 1951, 1977, 1978, 1983, 1992 and 1998. The increased frequency of anomalous years following the 1976/1977 climatic regime shift, rather than an overall decline in similarity, may account for the difference in PSI means before and after the regime shift. Of the 6 anomalous cruises, 3 coincided with strong California El Niño events during the warm-water period of the 1980s and 1990s, while 2 occurred immediately after the 1976/1977 regime shift.

Palomares-García & Gómez-Gutiérrez (1996) found species richness to be similar during EN and NEN periods, but as shown in our survey, the species composition was sharply different as was also the relative density of cold-temperate species (Paracalanus parvus, Acartia danae Giesbrecht, 1889) which displaced tropical forms (Acartia lilljeborgii Giesbrecht, 1889, Acartia tonsa Dana, 1849) during the NEN period. A similar, general effect was described for euphausiid species by Gómez-Gutiérrez et al (1995), even during a weaker EN event.…”

El Niño probably is the main oceanographic phenomenon in the California region. Yet, little has been investigated about changes in the epipelagic copepod communities related to El Niño conditions, particularly off the Baja California area. Thus, a survey is presented here that compares the structure of the local copepod winter community off Southern Baja California, during the 1982-83 El Niño (EN) and in a non-El Niño (NEN) period (1984). In the NEN survey, the community was dominated by Pleuromamma abdominalis, Euchaeta marina, and Paracalanus parvus, which together constituted 43% of overall copepod numbers. The proportion of tropical species was 87%. In contrast, during the EN period species of Subeucalanus were dominant, and the tropical species represented up to 95% of total species diversity. The effect of EN showed latitudinal variations that would depend largely on the reaches of the warm water intrusion to the north. As compared with the NEN period, El Niño conditions showed a higher overall density and a higher proportion of tropical species along the N-S gradient. The copepod community structure off the Baja California area seems to respond sharply to the conditions set by EN. Density, species richness, or diversity alone might be misleading in identifying EN-NEN changes in the Baja California copepod community. RÉSUMÉEl Niño est probablement le phénomène océanographique majeur dans la région californienne. Peu de recherches ont été menées sur les changements concernant les communautés épipélagiques de copépodes en relation avec les conditions d'El Niño, en particulier au large de la région de la Basse Californie. Une étude est présentée ici, comparant la structure de la communauté copépodologique hivernale locale au large de la Basse Californie méridionale au cours d'El Niño (EN) 1982-83 et une période sans El Niño (NEN) (1984). Dans l'étude sur NEN, la communauté était dominée par Pleuromamma abdominalis, Euchaeta marina et Paracalanus parvus, qui constituent ensemble 43% de la totalité des copépodes. La proportion d'espèces tropicales était de 87%. The behaviour, distribution and abundance of the Pacific sardine Sardinops sagax, detected by acoustics, was studied in relation to the pelagic environmental conditions of water temperature, fluorescence and dissolved oxygen concentration induced by tidal currents in Bahía Magdalena, México (24°32′ N; 112°01′ W). Sampling was along an 18 km long transect covering an area inside the bay (mean depth 20 m), the main entrance to the bay (mean depth 35 m), and the continental shelf (mean depth 100 m). The main entrance to the bay was the most dynamic area along the hydrographic transect, where the Pacific sardines tended to aggregate, probably to feed on the phytoplankton accumulated during the receding tide. With the flood tide, a high‐speed tidal current is generated, introducing cool water with low oxygen concentrations into the bay. During the ebb tide, a tidal wave is also formed, but the warm and relatively well oxygenated bay water mass is transported towards the open sea. Acoustic records showed that whatever the tidal current direction (inflow or outflow), no fish schools were detected within the area of more intense tidal current speeds (>120 cm s−1). Visual observations of surface Pacific sardine schools during the flood tide indicate that sardines were out of the transducer signal detection range (<10 m depth), suggesting that Pacific sardines undergo vertical migration, probably to avoid the high water current speed with low dissolved oxygen content. This behaviour may have a relevant effect on the overall hydroacoustic estimation of small pelagic fish abundance in shallower pelagic environments such as this subtropical bay.
