Coordination Programming of Two-Dimensional Metal Complex Frameworks

Abstract: Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional materials with atomic thickness have attracted much attention because of their characteristic physical and chemical properties. Recently, coordination nanosheets (CONASHs) came into the world as new series of two-dimensional frameworks, which can show various functions based on metal complexes formed by numerous combinations of metal ions and ligands. This Feature Article provides an overview of recent progress in synthesizing CONASHs and in elucidating their in… Show more

“…[188] Specifically, adding the aqueous solution of Zn(Ac) 2 to the CH 2 Cl 2 solution with dipyrrin ligand formed a water/oil interface, in which Zn 2+ and dipyrrin ligands spontaneously assembled at the interface and react to form 2D MOF films. [190][191][192] Additionally, 2D MOFs can be also prepared at liquid-solid interfaces. Recently, the same group prepared a bis-(terpyridine)zinc(II) [189] complex at the H 2 O/CH 2 Cl 2 interface relying on a similar procedure, demonstrating the versatility of this method.…”

“…2729 Metal–organic nanosheets have shown great promise as electronic sensors, 30 gas sorption membranes, 31 and catalysts, 32 but the range of metal–organic nanosheets is currently dramatically more constrained than for three-dimensional (3D) MOFs. Most current synthesis has focused on three routes: 33 assembly at an interface, 30,34 synthesis of nanosheets in bulk solution, 31,32 and liquid-phase exfoliation of weakly bound 2D layered materials (including with the assistance of surfactants). 35,36 To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of the synthesis of nanosheets from 3D framework materials, as this requires the breaking of strong metal–ligand bonds.…”

“…1 2D materials such as graphene and transition metal (TM) dichalcogenides exhibit fundamentally new properties that could be essential for next-generation electronic, photonic and renewable-energy applications. 26 Recently, 2D metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) 716 have emerged as a new class of hybrid inorganic–organic 2D materials marked by their intrinsic structural porosity, chemical tunability and high electrical conductivity. 17 These materials are synthesized through a bottom-up approach, by combining aromatic organic moieties that can ligate square-planar metal ions.…”
