Coordination chemistry and microbial iron transport

Abstract: When we began our neutron diffraction work in early 1974, only four metal hydride complexes had been investigated by this technique.7'8,49,50 Four years later, through the efforts of several different groups, the situation has changed dramatically: there are now over two dozen metal hydride complexes whose structures have been accurately analyzed by single-crystal neutron diffraction, as summarized in Table I. It seems clear that neutron diffraction will continue to be extensively used to analyze such compound… Show more

“…Thus intramolecular N-H···S hydrogen bonds, in analogy to N-H···O contacts which are typical for tri(catechoylamide) complexes [7,8], are not formed. This is also corroborated by 1 [23, 27 -35]. The five-membered C 2 S 2 Ti chelate rings in the anion [Ti(5)] 2− are folded along the S···S axis with dihedral angles between the TiS 2 and the C 6 planes in the range of 18.2(1)-25.6(1) • .…”

“…As often noted (1)(2)(3)(4) iron is needed in organisms in relatively large amounts. A 70-kg adult human has Ϸ5 g of iron (Ϸ10 Ϫ3 M for body volume), whereas a bacterial cell of 10 Ϫ9 cm 3 requires 10 5 to 10 6 ferric ions per generation to maintain the required 10 Ϫ6 M internal concentration (5).…”

“…The pM value, which is defined as the negative logarithm of the equilibrium concentrations of the unbound metal ion under the given conditions (pH, analytical concentrations of the ligand and metal ion), was introduced by Raymond et al [47] to gauge the relative affinities of species. In this way we take into account equilibria occurring simultaneously with the metalligand complex formation such as (de)protonation processes of the ligand, and hydrolysis of the organometallic fragment.…”
