Coordination Behavior of 3‐Ethoxycarbonyltetronic Acid towards Cu(II) and Co(II) Metal Ions

Abstract: Tetronic acids, 4-hydroxy-5H-furan-2-ones, constitute a class of heterocyclic compounds with potent biological and pharmacological activity. The β, β′-tricarbonyl moiety plays an integral role in biological systems and forms a variety of metal complexes. In this report, we present the complexation reactions of 3-ethoxycarbonyl tetronic acids with acetates and chlorides of Cu(II) and Co(II). These complexes have been studied by means of EPR spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. From the obtaine… Show more

“…Several studies of paramagnetic systems with spin of S = 3/2 have given evidence for the existence of EPR signals at various g eff values. In principle, depending mainly on the magnitude of the zero-field splitting parameters in comparison to the microwave energy, EPR transitions take place either within the Kramers doublets, |±1/2⟩ and |±3/2⟩, or between them . Moreover, in many cases, both intra- and inter-doublet transitions take place, resulting in the presence of EPR signals at both low and high magnetic field region. , In order to examine whether the EPR signal at g eff ≈ 4 that was attributed to the high-spin S = 3/2 Co(II) species is accompanied by signals at lower g eff values, we performed EPR experiments similar to those described recently but at a wider magnetic field range.…”

“…In the course of our research program on transition metal complexes with heterocyclic scaffolds containing the β -diketo functionality [ 21 23 ], we reported in a recent work the coordination model of tetronic acids with Cu (II) and Co (II) ions [ 10 , 24 ].…”
