Borrowing hydrogen or the hydrogen autotransfer amination is a powerful approach to create single C–N bonds, starting from stable and readily available substrates: amines and alcohols. It is considered as one of the most atom-efficient and green methods to synthesize complex amines. Herein, we attempted to arrange the array of the existing data in a comprehensive and structured manner and determine correlations between the experimental conditions and catalysis outcome both within different groups of catalysts and between the defined groups using the machine analysis. For each type of N-nucleophiles (aromatic, aliphatic, and heteroaromatic amines, amides), the most efficient working conditions were suggested, including attributing the optimal base and temperature regime for each metal.

Sustainable Amination of Bio-Based Alcohols by Hydrogen Borrowing Catalysis

In this review, we aim to give an overview of the use of the Borrowing Hydrogen (BH) methodology with bio-based alcohols. This methodology only forms water as a by-product, thus providing a sustainable way to amines, which have a large range of applications. This process is of particular interest when related to biomass due to the high abundance of alcohol functions in natural compounds. However, natural compounds often comprise multiple chemical functions that can change the reactivity of the substrate. This comprehensive review, comprising both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, aims at summarizing the recent advancements in biomass amination for every class of substrate, highlighting the key parameters governing their reactivity and the remaining scientific hurdles. Even though most substrates have successfully been converted into the corresponding amines, reaction selectivity and functional group tolerance still need to be improved.

A series of new hexa-coordinated ruthenium(II) hydroxyquinoline-thiosemicarbazone complexes of the type [Ru(CO)(EPh 3 )(B) (L)] (E = P or As; B = PPh 3 , AsPh 3 or Py; L = hydroxyquinoline-thiosemicarbazone) were synthesized by reacting ruthenium precursor complexes [RuHCl(CO)(EPh 3 ) 2 (B)] (E = P or As; B = PPh 3 , AsPh 3 or Py) with hydroxyquinoline-thiosemicarbazone ligands in ethanol. The new complexes were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV-visible, NMR ( 1 H, 13 C and 31 P) and fast atom bombardment (FAB)-mass spectrometric methods. Based on the spectral results, an octahedral geometry was assigned for all the complexes. The new complexes showed good catalytic activity for the conversion of aldehydes to amides in the presence of hydroxylamine hydrochloride-sodium bicarbonate and for the oxidation of alkanes into their corresponding alcohols and ketones in the presence of m-chloroperbenzoic acid. The complexes also catalyzed the N-alkylation of benzylamine in the presence of KOtBu in alcohol medium.
