This paper presents a technique based on the novel bat algorithm (NBA) for the design of the parameters of power system stabilizers and the generalized Unified power flow controllerpower oscillation damping in a multimachine power system. The objective is to ensure minimal damping rates to low-frequency electromechanical oscillation modes. Simulations were carried out on the New England system to compare the performance of the NBA with three other techniques: particle swarm optimization, bacterial foraging optimization oriented by particle swarm optimization, and the bat algorithm. For the cases analyzed in this paper, the NBA produced results superior to other techniques. Moreover, the proposed methodology was able to obtain solutions with high damping levels, which showed to be robust when a wide range of loading conditions of the power system were considered.

Resumo-Esse artigo apresenta um algoritmo híbrido para a solução do problema do projeto coordenado de estabilizadores de sistemas de potência. É proposto um passo adicional no Algoritmo de Otimização baseado na Ecolocalização de Morcegos com o objetivo de se fazer uma busca local através do Método do Gradiente. O procedimento de ajuste é formulado como um problema de otimização que objetiva a otimizar o amortecimento do sistema considerando um conjunto pré especificado de condições operativas.Palavras-Chave -Bat Algorithm, Método do Gradiente, Estabilizadores de Sistemas de Potência , Estabilidade Dinâmica. I. INTRODUÇÃOOs Sistemas Elétricos de Potência (SEP) têm operado próximos aos seus limites de capacidade, o que faz que problemas relacionados à estabilidade tornem-se mais frequentes. Na ocorrência de variações de carga ou mudanças de topologia, tem-se a origem de desequilíbrios entre os torques elétricos e mecânicos das unidades geradoras, originando as oscilações eletromecânicas associadas aos rotores das máquinas síncronas. As oscilações eletromecânicas não amortecidas comprometem a estabilidade do sistema e limitam a quantidade de potência transferida entre áreas [1].Com o objetivo de adicionar amortecimento às oscilações do rotor, pode-se modular a tensão de excitação das máquinas síncronas através dos Estabilizadores de Sistemas de Potência (ESP). Um estabilizador consiste em uma estrutura de controle composta por um bloco de ganho e estágios de compensação de fase que recebe um sinal medido no sistema (desvio de velocidade no terminal da máquina) e injeta um sinal de controle no sistema de excitação das máquinas síncronas [2].Considerando que cada gerador possui o seu estabilizador e que um SEP possui vários geradores, o projeto desses controladores deve ser feito de forma coordenada (simultânea) com o objetivo de reduzir interações indesejáveis, conforme descrito em [3]. Além disso, o controlador projetado deve ser robusto, isto é, apresentar desempenho adequado para as diferentes condições operativas do sistema (mudanças de topologia e níveis de carregamento). Do exposto acima, observa-se que o projeto de estabilizadores é uma tarefa que exige considerável esforço por parte do projetista. Conforme, [4] os métodos de projeto de estabilizadores podem ser divididos nas seguintes categorias: (i) técnicas baseadas em controle clássico tais como alocação de polos e resposta em frequência e (ii) técnicas baseadas em otimização.As técnicas de otimização possuem a vantagem de ajustar os parâmetros dos controladores de forma coordenada com o objetivo de otimizar um determinado índice de desempenho implícito ou explicito do sistema em malha fechada. Quando são considerados índices implícitos, tem-se os métodos de Projeto baseados em Otimização Analítica, tais como o método do Regulador Quadrático (LQR) e o método baseado em Inequações Lineares (LMI). Low-frequency electromechanical oscillations is a topic of great concern in power system operation. Undamped oscillations reduce the power transfer capacity and can lead the system to blackouts. Since the 70s, synchronous generators operate with power system stabilizers that add damping torque to oscillations through the excitation system control. These controllers can have either a conventional fixed structure, composed by stages of gain and phase compensation, or a multi-band structure (MB-PSS), composed by three bands that correspond to a specific frequency range (low, intermediate and high frequency). In the MB-PSS structure, each band consists of two branches based on differential filters (with a gain stage and lead-lag blocks). This paper presents an approach based on the Newton-Raphson method for tuning MB-PSS for power systems taking into consideration several operating conditions to ensure robustness. The approach adjusts the controller's gains to place a set of poles into a region in the complex plane with a desired damping ratio. Firstly, the method is applied to the well-known single-machine infinite bus system represented by the Heffron-Phillips model. Secondly, an application to the multimachine South-Southeastern Brazilian power system is discussed considering different operating conditions. The convergence of the proposed approach is evaluated regarding the initial conditions, the desired damping ratio, and the set of monitored poles. Linear and nonlinear time-domain simulations validate the designed controllers. Finally, it is shown that the computational effort required by the proposed approach is lower than the one required by a class of methods widely reported in the literature for MB-PSS design.
