With the continuous increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in the market, both EVs and charging stations are rapidly developing. This paper provides an overview of the negative impacts of EV charging on the distribution grid at the current stage. It summarizes specific solutions proposed by scholars both domestically and internationally to address the effects on voltage, harmonics, and power quality. These solutions mainly involve the addition of filters to the distribution grid, the use of 12-pulse rectifiers, and series resonance. Furthermore, the paper analyzes how Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology can balance the grid and regulate power quality issues caused by EV charging, ensuring stable system operation. V2G technology also enables EVs to function as mobile energy storage devices and allows for rational energy distribution using bidirectional charging stations. The integration of charging stations with the grid, forming a connected vehicle network, is considered the future direction of EV development.

The proposed research is to accomplish a converter for driving DC load or AC load with wireless power transfer (WPT) technique. In this novel scheme, a full-bridge LLC resonant converter is adopted to deliver the energy from the primary to the secondary side. Besides, the LLC converter has softswitching characteristic of the switches at the primary to improve the efficiency of the converter if the switching frequency is selected appropriately. In order to achieve the feature of wireless power transfer, the WPT (transmitting/receiving) coils are utilized to replace the transformer. The leakage inductor can be treated as a resonant inductor integrated in the transmitting coil. In the output side, a sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) technique is added to generate AC voltage for specific load. In other words, the proposed converter can output DC or AC voltage by user's demand. In the end of this research, a LLC converter with WPT technique for 1kW is implemented. The experimental results and the related waveforms are also shown in the content. In this topology, the highest efficiency of DC output is 89.2%, and the highest efficiency of AC output is 82.6% respectively.

Mitigating the Impact of an Official PEV Charger Deployment Plan on an Urban Grid

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are rapidly increasing all over the world as electromobility is being promoted to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. PEVs locally produce zero emissions and they are more efficient in contrast to internal combustion engine vehicles. On the other hand, the impact of the uncoordinated charging of PEVs is expected to create new challenges for the established distribution grid. This article initially evaluates the impact of uncoordinated charging on the voltage regulation and transformer loading in the city of Heraklion, Greece. Then, a coordinated charging strategy is proposed to deal with the issue of transformer capacity violation by PEVs. Two cases were considered when the transformer overloading from PEV charging was taken into consideration: (a) keeping the transformer below its nominal capacity limit and (b) keeping the transformer below 90% of its nominal capacity limit. This was achieved by distributing the available capacity (nominal capacity minus the residential loads) of the transformer to the PEV chargers in a way that the aforementioned limits were satisfied. Real-world data of the distribution grid and the hourly power consumption of the city were used to validate the proposed method. Results show that possible transformer capacity violation can be tackled by the proposed coordinated charging, without exceeding the voltage regulation limits.
