Coordinated Control of Reactive Power between STATCOMs and Wind Farms for PCC Voltage Regulation

Abstract: This paper proposes a coordinated control of the reactive power between the STATCOMs (static synchronous compensators) and the grid-side converters (GSC) of wind farms equipped with PMSGs (permanent-magnet synchronous generators), by which the voltage fluctuations at the PCC (point of common coupling) are mitigated in the steady state. In addition, the level of voltage sags is reduced during grid faults. To do this, the GSC and the STATCOM supply reactive power to the grid coordinately, where the GSCs are full… Show more

“…These systems can have negative effects on power quality, such as phase imbalances, low power factor and harmonic distortion. Because the power quality problems adversely affect other electric facilities sharing the same line with these systems that cause power quality problems, technology is needed to improve power quality and stabilize the complex power system by eliminating these issues [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) is a representative technology for improving power quality.…”

“…The reactive power reference generated through the WPP controller is allocated to the wind turbines constituting the WPP. Methods of allocating reactive power references to wind turbines include a method of allocating equally to each turbine, and a method of allocating through optimization considering the internal network and transformer losses, layout of the WPP, and turbine location [14][15][16][17].…”

“…The fuzzy Interference system is used to achieve fast dynamic response, no overshoot and reduction of settling time is achieved to maintain the constant DC voltage [10]. In [11] studied the injection of negative sequence current for reducing the unbalanced voltage at the point of PCC. The rotor currents are decoupled in to direct component and quadrature component for regulating active and reactive power using PI Controllers [12][13].…”
