Coordinate anionic ring‐opening polymerization of oxetanes with aluminum benzyl alcoholate bis(2,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐methylphenolate)

Abstract: Aluminum benzyl alcoholate bis(2,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐methylphenolate) (BnOAD), which was prepared through the mixing of equimolar amounts of benzyl alcohol and methylaluminum bis(2,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐methylphenolate) (MAD), successfully polymerized four‐membered cyclic ethers in a coordinate anionic ring‐opening manner. The polymerization of 3‐(4‐bromobutoxymethyl)‐3‐methyloxetane (OxBr) with 5 mol % BnOAD proceeded slowly in toluene at 25 °C and produced sufficiently high‐molecular‐weight poly(OxBr) in a moderat… Show more

“…12a Even more difficulty was found for the polymerization of 8 (entries 11 and 12 in Table S1). Other initiators reported for the anionic coordinated ring-opening polymerization, such as aluminum complexes, 16 were not effective for the polymerization of 8, which reacted rather with the radical groups to undergo decomposition.…”

“…16 Attempts to polymerize 3 or 4 with the Lewis acidic BF 3 or other cationic initiators were unsuccessful, resulting from the undesired oxidation of the radical pendants. Initiators reported for anionic coordinated ringopening polymerization, such as aluminum complexes, 17 were not effective for the polymerization of 3 and 4 (entry 11), which reacted with the radical groups to undergo decomposition.…”

“…4 Aluminum phenoxide was synthesized and used differently in several chemical processes. It has been utilized in an isolated or in situ generated forms [27,[29][30][31]. In fact, the synthesis of aluminum phenoxide was first reported over 130 years ago [32].…”
